Apply for exemption to quarantine
All non-essential arrivals to the Northern Territory (NT) need to quarantine for 14 days.
You can apply for exemption from quarantine requirements if you are not covered by one of the existing exemption categories.
Who can apply
The Chief Health Officer can grant an exemption on the grounds that the person or class meets one of the below requirements:
- Is essential for the proper functioning of the Territory.
- Needs an exemption to avoid unusual, undeserved, or disproportionate hardship.
- Is governed by a coronavirus (COVID-19) management plan, imposed by the employer of the person or class of persons, to prevent the transmission of COVID-19.
- People who have booked and paid for accommodation in the NT prior to arrival. If granted, the quarantine period must be carried out in their pre-arranged hotel.
- Application for this exemption must be made before arrival in the NT (under the financial hardship category) and this needs to be approved by the Chief Health Officer prior to arrival in the NT.
- If evidence of this approval can't be provided on arrival, you must go into the NT Government arranged forced quarantine facility. If/when the exemption comes through, arrangements will be made to transport those with exemption to their pre-arranged venue.
How to apply
Fill the application for exemption PDF (317.9 KB).
Submit it by email to doh.exempt@nt.gov.au with your name and date of travel in the subject heading.
Your application will then be assessed on its merits by the Chief Health Officer or appropriate delegate.

Please be assured that all applications received to date are being processed. Do not re-send applications.
Note: If you hand in your application upon arrival or do not receive exemption prior to travel, you will be required to quarantine as directed until your application has been assessed.
How you will be notified
You will receive a letter or email from the Chief Health Officer advising you of the decision of your application.
You are required to continue quarantine if you are in the NT until you are advised of this decision.
